BulletSelf-Drive Hire

SelfDrive

The company operates a self–drive service for bona-fide voluntary organisations, and registered members of the Dial-a-Journey service.

Dial-a-Journey cannot make vehicles available to the general public for self-drive hire – all users must have either temporary or full Dial-a-Journey Membership.

Self-drive hire for voluntary groups
Many groups use our vehicles to take their members a variety of places.  We offer vehicles from MPV’s up to 16 seat minibuses for their use at affordable prices.  Drivers of minibuses must be holders of a current Midas certificate, or obtain one before being allowed to hire vehicles.

Self-drive for Members
We have a number of smaller vehicles ideally suited for members of the service to hire that can be driven by a family member or carer.  This offers members the ability to have their own personal travel for day’s out or short holiday’s without the need to worry about planning their activities around transport arrangements.  This is proving to be a popular choice with vehicles regularly being used at evenings and weekends.

BuylletTraining Activities

Dial-a-Journey currently carries out a number of transport related training activities to compliment it’s work.

Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme - (MiDAS)

LogoMidas

In 1996, Dial-a-Journey enrolled on the Community Transport Association's (CTA) Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS). It recognised the need for a nationally accepted training and assessment scheme for all types of minibus driver.
Since 1997, Dial-a-Journey has delivered this training for many organisations, and currently trains around 200 drivers a year.

Minibus Evacuation Techniques
More recently, Dial-a-Journey has chosen to provide Minibus Evacuation Training, as it is crucially important to get this right in the event of an unforeseen incident. This training involves a classroom session to inform candidates of the elements of fire, possible causes of accidents, and how to evacuate a minibus in the event of an accident/incident.  This is followed by practical exercises in a minibus that simulate the environment drivers and passengers may find themselves in, and how to deal with them.

Passenger Assistant Training (P.A.T.S.)
Similarly, our Trainers have deliver the CTA accredited P.A.T.S. course, that covers topics relating to the care of passengers whilst in the care of passenger assistants (escorts).
We deliver this training to local authorities who employ passenger assistants, and our own staff.

PCV Training
Following changes in legislation in 1997, divers who obtained their car driving licence do not automatically have a minibus driving entitlement on their licence.

In addition, there is currently a shortage of professional bus drivers.  To meet these needs, Dial-a-Journey currently has 2 driving instructors who deliver training to candidates who wish to obtain their PCV licence.  This can either be done in our larger coach that meets current test standards, or alternatively in our 16 seat minibus that also meets current test standards.

Because the cost of training is not significantly different between the larger and smaller vehicles, and the procedure for getting to test stage is identical, candidates are encouraged to undertake training in the larger vehicle, as they will not be restricted to driving smaller buses, and their career prospects will be enhanced.

Driver CPC Training
Dial-a-Journey is currently in the process of setting up as an accredited training centre to deliver the forthcoming Driver CPC to professional bus and coach drivers.
